Being a bail bondsman is probably not a career a lot of people dreamed of growing up. However, the popularity of television shows, such as “Dog the Bounty Hunter,” have increased interest in this profession. If you think you might like to become a bail bondsman, there are a few steps you will need to take.

Make Sure You Are Eligible

Not just anyone can work for a Pennsylvania bail bond company. Rules vary by state, but usually, you must be at least 18-years-old, take a pre-licensing course, pass a state licensing exam, have a high school diploma or GED, get the sponsorship of a surety company and meet all of their surety requirements.

Get Some Training

Bail bondsmen are not just tough guys who ride motorcycles and have lots of tattoos. You need to understand economics, finance, business administration and law. For this reason, many bail bondsmen obtain an associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree in one or more of these subject areas. At a minimum, you will probably need to take a course that will help you pass the licensing exam in your state and some states require it.

Pass the State Licensing Exam

Most states will not let you work as a bail bondsman without passing an exam. Check to see if you meet the requirements to take the exam before you attempt it. You may need to provide proof that you completed the required pre-licensing coursework. You may also be required to pay an exam fee and cover the cost of getting fingerprinted.

Obtain State License

Once you have passed the exam, you will need to obtain a license. This process usually involves submitting an application and fee, along with your test scores, documentation of surety sponsorship and the submission of a bond.
