Best trees for small gardens

Thomas Forster January 19, 2025 Reviews Leave a Comment

You can find trees to improve your small garden. A beautiful tree will act as the centre of attention in a small garden, and can also add privacy to overlooked properties. Planting a tree that has berries will attract wildlife to your garden. Or, you can enjoy the fruits and benefits of a fruit-bearing tree like an apple or pear tree.

Consider planting a tree in a container if you are unsure of where to place it. It can then be easily moved and brought with you if you move. Shrubs, like lilacs or viburnums, are also a good solution for a smaller garden. Here are a few tree types that would be ideal for small gardens:

Rowans

The Rowan is a small, attractive garden tree that produces berries in autumn and beautiful spring flowers. The trees are of a good height and provide a lot of food to wildlife. For a range of Semi Mature Trees, visit https://www.naturefirst.co.uk/semi-mature-trees/

Peaches

The peach tree is a good size and can be planted in a small space. Despite popular belief, they are hardy enough to survive the British climate. Plant in a warm, sunny and sheltered location to ensure good fruit production.

Magnolias

There are smaller magnolias available. Many magnolias grow too large for small gardens. You can find shorter species like Magnolia wilsonii and stellate.

Ornamental cherries

The spring blossoms of the ornamental cherries are stunning and also perfect for pollinators. It’s the perfect tree to make a statement while also helping wildlife in your area.

Birch

For a small space, choose a shorter birch such as Betula utilis and Jacquemontii. The white stems are a striking contrast to the other foliage.

Palms

Hardy palms are a great choice for many garden styles. Mexican blue palms and Mediterranean fan palms are smaller and tougher varieties.
