Types of industrial valves

There are a number of types of industrial valve that are used today. The most common types are discussed below.

Gate valves

Gate valves are linear motion valves that work by lifting a ‘gate’ out of the path of the fluid to allow flow or dropping the gate down to prevent flow. These are usually made from steel or cast iron. Gate valves are used in several industries including oil and gas, chemical processing, and water treatment.

Globe valves

Globe valves are a type of linear motion valve that consist of a movable disc/plug and a stationary ring seat. When the disc is lowered the flow is shut off, when it is fully raised the flow is at its maximum, and when it is partially raised, the flow is regulated.

Globe valves are mostly used as control valves, and applications include cooling systems, feed water systems, and turbine systems.

Ball valves

These valves utilise a ball to control the flow. The hole in the ball can be open or closed. These are a popular choice in industry because they offer excellent sealing, can support a variety of pressures and temperatures, and are reliable and simple to operate.

Butterfly valves

These valves can stop, regulate, or start flow. They are popular in industrial settings due to their lightweight nature and fast operation. They can be operated manually, electronically, or pneumatically.

These are used in various industries including water supply, pharmaceutical, food processing, fire protection, and gas/oil.

Check valves

Check valves, also known as non-return valves, are essential for preventing backflow. They only permit the flow in one direction, and are very simple to operate. They are used in industries including petrochemicals and water management.
