It is not uncommon for people to experience hearing problems. Identifying the cause is the first step to ensuring effective treatment.

1. Ear Infection

Anyone can develop an ear infection, although children are more at risk. The inflammation and pain that often accompany hearing loss are a response to bacteria or viruses.

2. Conductive Hearing Loss

Conductive hearing loss is when something blocks the passage of sound through the ear. This obstruction could be earwax, fluid, or a structural issue. Treatment generally involves removing the obstruction. In the most severe cases, this may involve surgery.

3. Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

This is most common in people who work in loud environments, such as construction workers or musicians, but it can also occur just from attending one noisy event. Some incidents are temporary, but the more you are exposed to noise, the more likely it will become permanent. This is why ear protection, such as headphones, is important.

4. Age-Related Hearing Loss

Loss of hearing is a natural part of the ageing process. The proper name is presbycusis. As it progresses gradually, it often takes a long time to be noticed. If you are worried, you can arrange a hearing test Bristol through a site such as www.imperialhearing.com/audiologist-near-me/bristol/. Hearing aids may be able to restore some hearing.

5. Meniere’s Disease

A type of inner ear disorder with an unclear cause, symptoms of Meniere’s disease include vertigo, tinnitus and the ear feeling full, as well as hearing loss. These symptoms often appear intermittently. One possible cause is fluid build-up inside the ear. A mix of medication and lifestyle changes may alleviate symptoms, but there is no cure.

6. Sudden Hearing Loss

Sometimes, you can rapidly lose your hearing in one ear without any obvious reason. This is known as sudden sensorineural hearing loss/SSHL, or sudden deafness. It requires immediate medical attention.

These are not the only things that could cause problems with your hearing, but they are some of the most common, and should therefore probably be what you check first.
