What is finger knitting?

You may have tried finger knitting at school. Finger knitting doesn’t require knitting needles; instead, you use your fingers to thread the yarn across and tie knots. It is very easy for beginners to do and not only great for children but also fun for more experienced knitters who are looking for something a little different.

What kit do you need to finger knit?

Finger knitting doesn’t require much kit at all. All you will need is your fingers, a ball of colourful yarn, and a pair of scissors. You can use super chunky wool from a company such as  woolcouturecompany.com/collections/super-chunky-yarn if you like, as this will give you results really quickly. Even better, the super chunky yarn has a lovely squashy effect quite different from anything else.

How do you start finger knitting?

You begin by taking a length of yarn and putting it over your palm. Use your thumb to hold it in place, with the end facing it down, and think about creating loops as opposed to stitches and chains instead of rows. You will take the yarn and put it behind your index finger, over your middle finger, under your ring finger, and over your pinkie. Go back in reverse, keeping the yarn tight, and you will have two loops on every finger.

Using your index finger, take the bottom loop and put it over the second loop before lifting it off. Repeat the process with the other three so that there is one loop on every finger. Repeat the steps until the finger knitting project reaches the length you want to work with.

With a bit of practice, you can become really good at finger knitting, create some great projects, and start conversations everywhere you go.
